Pathu Thala is a 2023 Indian Tamil-language neo-noir action thriller directed by Obeli N. Krishna, starring Silambarasan and Gautham Karthik in the lead roles. The film is a remake of the 2017 Kannada neo-noir thriller, Mufti. The film’s plot revolves around an undercover cop, Gunalan (Gautham Karthik), who is sent to arrest the notorious gangster AG Raavanan (Silambarasan).
The film also features Priya Bhavani Shankar, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Kalaiyarasan, Teejay Arunasalam, and Anu Sithara in supporting roles. The film was released on 30 March 2023 and received positive reviews from both critics and audiences.
The music for the film was composed by A. R. Rahman, marking his second collaboration with director Obeli N. Krishna after Sillunu Oru Kaadhal. The soundtrack features five songs, including the first, “Namma Satham,” and the second, “Ninaivirukka”.
The film’s production was marred by delays, with director Narthan dropping out and being replaced by Obeli N. Krishna. The shooting of the film began in August 2021 and was completed in November 2022. The film’s release was initially scheduled for December 2022 but was postponed to March 2023.
Pathu Thala was released theatrically and grossed over ₹12.3 crores worldwide on its first day of release, with the film collecting over ₹40 crores in Tamil Nadu. Within seven days of its release, the film collected a whopping ₹68 crore. Critics praised the film for its lead actors and standout moments, but some felt that it lacked novelty and had predictable elements.
